08-09-2003 Scheduled Maintenance: Window 00:30 - 04:00AM EST

Post by porcupine »

Hello everyone,

The BGP upgrade has been scheduled. It will be done on Saturday August 9th, the maintenance window is between 12:30am and 4:30am.

We expect several small "hiccups" as routes are reconfigured, disabled, reconverge, and brought back up. This will be one (if not) the final configuration change involving any downtime. Downtime during this time is expected not to exceed 30 minutes of combined downtime this window, but as noted, it will involve several short 'hiccups'.

To complete this process, our primary router (R1) will need to be taken completely offline to be reconfigured from scratch. During this time, traffic will be routed through our new additional router [which will be active, not just a backup/secondary] and through our new Peer1 link. During this time, the initial switch will likely involve up to 15 minutes of downtime as R2 picks up the IP addresses that R1 was listening on, and announces out the routes.

This change will affect all current IP addresses, as well as the new blocks. After this is done, with the exception of the very very small percentage of customers (< 2%) who are not on our main blocks (who are on smaller, emergency allocated blocks that are < 64 ip's), all current ip's will become more redundant.

In the future, after this has been completed, scheduled maintenance on the routers will not affect uptime as transit will merely be routed through the other remaining ones until that maintenance is compelted.
