Tor1 UPS Maintenance - 19-Dec-2022 - 9:00am - 2:45pm Eastern Time

Post by porcupine »

Hi Folks,

Please be advised of the following maintenance window:

Maintenance Window: Monday December 19th, 2022 9:00am - 2:45pm Eastern Time
Facility: Tor1
Affected Device: UPS-B.tor1
Affected Customers: Tor1 Dedicated/Colocated customers with power fed from UPS-B.tor1
Service Impacting: No - Precautionary Notice Only

Details: We will be replacing the UPS batteries powering UPS-B.tor1 with new batteries. The batteries in this UPS plant have been in service for over 6 years. The batteries currently in this UPS are designed & rated for a 10 year service life, however an anomalous non-service-impacting incident occurred during the UPS's most recent internal test, which indicates we likely have at least one battery in the string nearing its end of life. The UPS plants run automated active load tests on the battery banks approximately every 3-4 weeks, as part of their regular charge cycle, to detect issues before they become service impacting.

Given the current battery string is in the later part of its expected service life, it makes more sense to replace the entire string, as opposed to attempting to weed out failing cells.

While we do not expect this to be a service impacting maintenance, the UPS unit will be operating on battery bypass, and should utility power fail at this time, there will be an interruption in services as the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) switches power from utility to generator. As such, this should be considered a precautionary maintenance window. Batteries will be replaced on a shelf by shelf basis, and efforts will be made to minimize time on bypass as one would reasonably expect.

UPS-A.tor1 will not be impacted by this maintenance, thus customers with A/B power feeds will be fully protected throughout this maintenance window, as will customers fed exclusively from UPS-A.tor1.
