Tor2 UPS Maintenance - 19-May-2023 - 9:00am - 1:00pm Eastern Time

Post by porcupine »

Hi Folks,

Please be advised of the following maintenance window:

Maintenance Window: Friday May 19th, 2023 - 9:00am - 1:00pm Eastern Time
Facility: Tor2
Affected Device: UPS-A.tor2, UPS-B.tor2
Affected Customers: Tor2 Dedicated/Colocated customers
Service Impacting: No - Precautionary Notice Only

Details: During UPS-A.tor2's most recent automated battery test, the UPS detected that voltage fell outside of the expected parameters during the discharge test, indicating that one or more batteries in the unit are not performing to specification. Upon test failure, the UPS immediately re-charged the battery string, and sent out notifications indicating the failure.

While the battery string is fully functional (IE: did not fail open/the load is still protected), this result indicates that it's batteries would not perform properly during a power failure (IE: would not last as long as expected), which is obviously undesirable. Given this, we have scheduled our UPS technicians to inspect/tentatively replace batteries on 19-May-2023.

The batteries in question were installed on 30-Jul-2020, and are still early in their service life. Batteries do periodically fail in during normal service life, which is why our UPS plants perform automated full-load testing on a monthly basis, which puts a live load on the batteries, in order to fully simulate a utility power failure.

While UPS-B.tor2 passed its battery test without issue, we've scheduled both units for this maintenance as both units batteries had been installed at the same time, and were part of the same batch. The UPS technician may wish to compare/contrast any findings between the two battery plants, or validate/rule out any bigger issues with the battery batch in question, etc.

While we do not expect this to be a service impacting maintenance, the UPS units will be operating on battery bypass at various times throughout, and should utility power fail at this time, there will be an interruption in services as the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) switches power from utility to generator. As such, this should be considered a precautionary maintenance window. As always, the amount of time the UPS spends on bypass will be minimized as best possible, and at no time will UPS-A.tor2 be on bypass at the same time as UPS-B.tor2.
