UPS-B.tor2 UPS Maintenance - 01-May-2024 - 9:00am - 11:00am Eastern Time

Post by porcupine »

Hi Folks,

Please be advised of the following maintenance window:

Maintenance Window: Wednesday May 1st, 2024 - 9:00am - 11:00am Eastern Time
Facility: Tor2
Affected Device: UPS-B.tor2
Affected Customers: Tor2 Dedicated/Colocated customers, fed from UPS-B.tor2
Service Impacting: No - Precautionary Notice Only

Details: During UPS-B.tor2's most recent automated battery test, the UPS detected that voltage fell outside of the expected parameters during the discharge test, indicating that one or more batteries in the unit are not performing to specification. Upon test failure, the UPS immediately re-charged the battery string, and sent out notifications indicating the failure.

While the battery string is fully functional (IE: did not fail open/the load is still protected), this result indicates that its batteries would not perform properly during a power failure (IE: would not last as long as expected), which is obviously undesirable.

Batteries do periodically fail in during normal service life, which is why our UPS plants perform automated full-load testing on a monthly basis, which puts a live load on the batteries, in order to fully simulate a utility power failure.

We expect the UPS to be on battery bypass for less then 30 minutes during this maintenance window, as the string has already been manually inspected, two sub-optimal batteries have been identified, and marked for replacement.

While we do not expect this to be a service impacting maintenance, the UPS unit will be operating on battery bypass while the failed batteries are being replaced, and should utility power fail at this time, there will be an interruption in services as the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) switches power from utility to generator. As such, this should be considered a precautionary maintenance window.

Note: UPS-A.tor2 did not indicate any issues during its testing, nor our subsequent inspection, and as such will not be worked on at this time.
